How to get there

How to get to Siena Cathedral

Siena lies in the heart of Tuscany, around 70 kilometres south of Florence. The cathedral stands in the historic centre on the Piazza del Duomo – not directly accessible by car, but well connected via multi-storey car parks, rail and public transport.

By car

The centre of Siena is part of the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) – a limited traffic zone that tourists are not allowed to drive into. Park your car on the outskirts and cover the last few metres on foot or using the escalators.

Recommended car parks

Duomo Car Park

Directions: Siena West motorway exit

Distance to Cathedral: approx. 350 m

Located directly below the cathedral, with escalators and a lift up to the Piazza del Duomo. Best choice when arriving from the north.

Il Campo Car Park (Santa Caterina)

Getting there: Siena Sud motorway exit

Distance to Cathedral: approx. 600 m

Escalators lead directly into the old town. A slightly longer walk to the cathedral than Parcheggio Duomo, but usually more available.

San Francesco Car Park

Directions: Eastern city entrance

Distance to Cathedral: approx. 900 m

Largest car park in the city, with escalator access. Good alternative when inner-city car parks are full.

Important: Never drive into the ZTL zone without authorisation. The city monitors the entrances with cameras, and fines will be sent to your home by post several weeks later.

By train

Siena railway station (Stazione di Siena) is located about 1.5 kilometres north-east of the cathedral. Direct connections are primarily from Florence and Empoli.

The last few metres to the cathedral

From Piazza del Campo, the city's main square, it's about a 5-minute uphill walk to the cathedral.

1

From the main square to the Duomo square

From Piazza del Campo, take Via di Città west. After 200 metres, Via dei Pellegrini branches off to the left and leads directly to the Cathedral.

2

Ticket office Crypt of the Duomo

Instead of going to the main entrance of the cathedral, keep to the right of the cathedral. The steps of San Giovanni lead down to the entrance of the crypt — that is where the official ticket office for voucher redemption is located.

3

With your paper ticket into the complex

After swapping, you'll use the paper ticket to access all sites within the complex. Recommended order: Crypt → Baptistery → Cathedral with Library → Museo dell’Opera with Facciatone → Oratorio San Bernardino.

Accessibility

The cathedral itself is accessible via a ramp on the left side of the building. The Museo dell’Opera, Crypt, and Baptistery have stairs without a lift and are not currently fully accessible. For wheelchair users and individuals with restricted mobility, it is recommended to call the official ticket office in advance.
